Contraception: The Implant

As mentioned before today I am back with what we call as long-acting but easily reversible contraceptive options.

  • Long Acting Reversible Contraceptives (LARC) have been around for a long time, and have been researched well to ensure they are safe and highly effective at preventing unintended pregnancy. · LARCs last a lot longer than the Pill
  • You don’t have to remember to take them every day
  • Can last for up to 3, 5 or even 10 years depending on what LARC you are choosing.
  • You can choose to stop at any time, and your fertility will return immediately.
  • Cost-effective and safe

The implant is a flexible rod that is inserted directly under the skin of the inner upper arm. The insertion and removal involve a small procedure, with a local anaesthetic, by a doctor or nurse trained in this procedure. It is in a device which appears like a stapler and it shoots the rod in. It almost feels like a pinch and is not a painful procedure.

It slowly releases a low dose of a progestogen hormone into the bloodstream over a 3 year period. It mainly works by preventing ovulation and is 99.9% effective. It is immediately reversible on removal. It can affect your periods and make it lighter or even stop.

The implant does not protect you from STIs, so use a condom if you are at risk of acquiring STIs.

See you all again with more LARCs

Have a peaceful weekend.
